I’m very proud to have curated, conceptualized and also contributed a print to Communication Threads & Entwined Recollections (Atelier LV), textile inspired silk screen prints with artists: Yu Cotton-Well, Leslie Gutierrez Saiz, Mavis Leahy, Dalila Paola Mendez, Racquel Ormsby Olivares, David Orozco, Eva Sandoval, Carol Shaw-Sutton and Patricia Valencia. Yes, it was the 55th annual Print Atelier produced in 2013 at Self Help Graphics & Art, an annual print collection that helps sustain its programming.
I am known as one of the “Maestras” at Self Help Graphics & Art, a term for female-teachers/artists or printers invited to participate in a special print series. The Maestra series began with artist Yreina Cervantes who created/curated a feminine perspective through prints, in a time when Self Help Graphics & Art’s print studios were mainly male dominated. I was inducted into the Maestras in 2002 with the “Upraise of the Urban Goddess” Maestras Atelier XL curated by Diane Gamboa. Fast forward to today when gender artistry is no longer needed at Self Help Graphics & Arts, the studios are filled with Chicanx and Latinx artists of all biological events and in equality. I’m so proud to be a part of the emerging love and continuous efforts in printing
The preview for Communication Threads & Entwined Recollections took place on Sunday, June 30, 2013, at Self Help Graphics & Art’s permanent home at 1300 East First Street, Boyle Heights, CA 90033. It included an Artist Panel Discussion that was moderated by Dr. Karen Mary Davalos and included atelier artists: Victoria Delgadillo, Dalila Paola Mendez, Racquel Ormsby-Olivares, Carol Shaw-Sutton, Patricia Valencia.
