As part of the Encuentro, the Cineteca Nacional México hosted a series of five programs presented by Jesse Lerner, filmmaker, researcher, and curator of the exhibition Aztlán, túnel del tiempo, along with several guests. Through documentaries, short films, experimental cinema, and historical materials produced between 1908 and the present, the series complements the exhibition and offered a journey through diverse representations of the experiences and imaginaries of Chicanx and Mexican-American communities.
COMMUNITY FILM NIGHT SCREENING AND PANEL DISCUSSION! August 4, 6:30pm., the independent space Punto Magnolia in Mexico City hosted a film screening and discussion on community resistance and Chicano culture, organized in collaboration with the Aztlán, túnel del tiempo exhibit at INBAL and the Chicanxs Sin Fronteras collective. This event was part of the satellite events for the International Chicanx Art Gathering and the Cineteca Nacional debate on migration and resistance. Featured in this presentation were Luis J. Rodríguez (Tía Chucha Centro Cultural & Bookstore, Los Ángeles). Martina Ayala (Aquí y Allá: El Derecho de Pertenecer, San Francisco), Raúl Baltazar (Visual Artist, Los Ángeles), Moderator: Alfonso Vázquez.
Our film Califas (view here) was part of this panel discussion and film night. Through this panel discussion, Raul Baltazar presented our art process, our thoughts on resistance through humorous visual art and our techniques for truth telling in the short film format, using our film Califas (2018) as the example. We were very excited to be a part of this historic art exhibit and programming.
In addition Raul Baltazar’s performance-art photo documentation and his traditional method of creating a painting for each of his performances were also on display in the Aztlán, túnel del tiempo display at Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes y Literatura (INBAL).
